What is Weight Training, Basically?

Weight training is a type of strength training that uses gravity and weights, such as "dumbbells" and "barbells"--also known as "free weights." You can do hundreds of different types of exercises with only these "free weights" and get a total body workout.

You can also do weight training exercises for women with "weight machines." These machines use stacks of weights to work your muscles. Most machines target a particular area of your body, but some can be used for muscle gain and toning for more than one body part.

Weight training is a form of strength training that can target major muscle groups as well as the smaller muscle groups. Different exercises work for different muscle groups (e.g., butt, thighs, hips, abs, arms, legs, etc.).

What Are the Benefits?

After you ask, "what is weight training?" you may also ask about the health and other benefits of weight training for women. The rewards are significant and go beyond just giving you a great looking body--as if that weren't enough!

Here's a list of a few things you can expect from regular workouts:

How Often Do I Have to Work Out?

Almost all strength training experts agree that you should not work the same muscles or muscle groups two days in a row. You need to have at least one day in between workouts in your weight training schedule to give your muscles a rest and let them recuperate and grow. Some coaches emphasize that it's OK to work out two days in a row if you are working different muscle groups.

The best thing to do here is find a strength training coach or weight lifting program for women that you trust and try out their recommendations. Of course, consulting with your medical professional, and especially checking in with your own body, is great advice, too.

Remember that not all health care professionals will be able to answer, "what is weight training," but if you haven't worked out in a long time, or if you have any health issues or concerns, you should consult with your doctor before you start a new exercise program.

How Long Are the Workouts?

This will depend on the particular type of program that you decide is best for you. Some well-respected fitness trainers promise that you can achieve your weight loss and muscle gain goals in as little as seven minutes per workout!

Most regular routines will take between a half-an-hour and an hour. However, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist and co-director of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center says, "You can see significant improvement in your strength with just two or three 20- or 30-minute weight training sessions a week."

How Long Before I Reach My Goals with My Weight Training Routine?

Of course, the answer to this will depend upon your specific goals, and your commitment.

How much fat do you want to burn? How much lean muscle do you want to gain? How strong do you want to be? And now that I know the answer to the question, "what is weight training," when will I get started?!
