What's the Best Way to Lose Weight?

Weight training is by far the best way to lose weight, and often the most overlooked way. If you're looking to lose weight fast for a special occasion, then lifting weights is not your answer.

But if you're looking for a healthy way to lose weight permanently, as well as tone and strengthen your muscles and have a body that you can be proud of, then lifting weights and other resistance workouts must be part of the equation.

We all know that "diet and exercise" together is the most effective way to take pounds off. But for some reason, we often don't combine these two things. We rely too much on the scale without paying attention to what is happening inside our bodies.

Exercise is crucial for effective long term weight control, and weight training is the best form of exercise for most women to accomplish this goal.

Unfounded Fear of Weight Training

Unfortunately, we have traditionally overlooked strength training as a method of weight loss for women. The reasons for this are many and include the fear of "bulking" up and becoming "muscle-bound" and unfeminine-looking.

This fear is totally unfounded. No matter how hard a woman works out lifting weights, she will never look like a muscle-bound guy. It's physiologically impossible because we don't have the level of testosterone that men have.

While we can naturally alter our hormonal levels, we cannot naturally increase our testosterone levels to build enormous muscles like men can.

So let go of the fear of becoming muscle-bound and unattractive. It won't happen.

Dieting Alone is Not Enough

Unfortunately, the majority of women in our western society have been on at least one diet in their lifetimes. Some girls start dieting as early as their pre-teens. We know from experience that diets don't work. And weight loss during menopause

can be even more challenging.

Sure, we might be able to take off a good number of pounds, but they eventually find their way back to our bodies (and they bring a few friends!).

One reason diets don't work is because they only focus on the number on a scale. And the number on a scale doesn't care if you've lost fat or if you've lost muscle (remember that muscle weighs more than fat).

If we diet without doing some sort of exercise to gain muscle, then we will not only lose fat, but we will lose muscle mass as well. Losing muscle mass slows down our metabolism and the weight loss process.

Strength training by lifting weights builds lean muscle for women, and this is very important for losing weight, as we shall see.

What About Aerobics as the Best Way to Lose Weight?

While cardiovascular training is important for overall health, too much aerobic training can actually slow down your weight loss process. It does this by burning not only fat, but also muscle, if you do too much. And muscle is the only body tissue that can burn fat while your body is at rest!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that aerobics exercise is bad, it is just not the best way to lose weight. It should only be done as one part of your workout routine to a healthier and more fit body.

So What's So Special about Weight Training?

And why is it the best way to lose weight?

Weight training, which is a type of strength training, builds muscle. The amount of lean body mass (muscle) you have directly impacts your resting metabolic rate (RMR). The more muscle you have, the higher your RMR.

This means that even when you aren't working out, the muscle you have developed through effective weight training will be burning fat. If you lose muscle through too much dieting or too much cardio, then your RMR will decrease and your weight loss efforts will slow down.
